Education
The Innovative University: Changing the DNA of Higher Education from the Inside Out. (2011). Clayton M. Christensen and Henry J. Eyring. An examination of two specific schools, Harvard and BYU-Idaho, and how they each achieved (or failed to achieve) the school's mission. Touches on the idea of Carnegie climbing within US universities, and give some insight as to the explosive cost of college in America.
Real Education: Four Simple Truths for Bringing America's Schools Back to Reality. (2009). Charles Murray. Murray is a a strong proponent of college NOT being for everyone--very much against the current mantra of college for all. Many salient points that help explain some of the problems we encounter in the classroom.
Dewey on Education. (1959). John Dewey. Number three in the Classics of Education series. Illustrates the maturing view of one of the most influential thinkers in education.
Democracy and Education. (Originally published in 1916). John Dewey. A seminal work on both the challenge and necessity of education in democracy. Very pertinent in today's instant gratification/extrinsically motivated world.
Forgotten Heroes of American Education: The Great Tradition of Teaching Teachers. (2006). Diane Ravitch & J. Wesley Null (Editors). A collection of works from eight pillars, the forgotten heroes of American education: William C. Bagley, Charles DeGarmo, David Felmley, William Torrey Harris, Isaac L. Kandel, Charles McMurry, William C. Ruediger, and Edward Austin Sheldon.
A Disciplined Progressive Educator: The Life and Times of William Chandler Bagley. (2006). J. Wesley Null. An excellent work on both the efforts of Bagley and the critical difference between progressive education (as in progress) and the Progressive education movement. Bagley was a well spoken supporter of teaching as a profession and a critic of what early what Progressive education was doing in schools, hence the term disciplined.
Peerless Educator: The Life and Work of Isaac Leon Kandel. (2007). J. Wesley Null. Kandel, Like Bagely, was a strong proponent of rigorous teacher training and struggled against many of the tenants of Progressive education.
The Schools We Need: And Why We Don't Have Them. (1999). E.D. Hirsch Jr. Hirsch is distinctively anti-Progressive and examines the state of American schools, how they reached such a dismal place, and what might be done to reverse the decline. Hirsch is an early proponent of a core curriculum that recaptures many of the ideas (civics for one) cast aside by Progressives.
The Making of Americans: Democracy and Our Schools. (2010). E. D. Hirsch Jr. Hirsch's follow-up work which digs deeper into the dysfunction of American schools (primarily K-12) and why the nation has gone so far off course with child-centric teaching.
Freefall of the American University: How Our Colleges Are Corrupting the Minds and Morals of the Next Generation (2012). Jim Black. Not as objective as Bok, Black describes part of the reason colleges are not getting the results--propaganda and political correctness substitutes for actual teaching and fact.
Our Underachieving Colleges: A Candid Look at How Much Students Learn and Why They Should Be Learning More. (2007). Derek Bok. Written by the former Harvard President Derek Bok, he gives an insightful examination of American colleges and why they are failing to teach the next generation of undergraduates the vital skills needed to succeed.
