Sometimes when you connect an external hard drive to your Mac, you’ll find that it’s set to read only. This happens because the drive is formatted with Microsoft’s NTFS filesystem, which macOS doesn’t support by default. Fortunately, it’s easy to fix so that your external hard drive is no longer read only.

Type "sudo mount -t hfs -o rdonly /dev/disk0s1 /Volumes/MyDisk" into the window. Replace "disk0" with the drive name, replace "s1" with the device number and replace "MyDisk" with the device name. Press "Return."
Why an external disk drive is not showing up? There could be a few reasons why an external hard or flash drive isn’t making an appearance.
If you want to have your macos partition automatically mount every time you start up you computer, then you’ll need to edit into your filesystem table (fstab). To do this, we will need to make a symlink to the apfs mount tool, and then edit the fstab (if you don’t have nano, use vim):
Keychain
Swap drives regularly between Windows PCs and Macs
To do this, shut down or restart your Mac, switch it back on and immediately press these four keys together for at least 20 seconds: Option, Command, P, and R. It should look as though your Mac has started again; if it has, release the keys when you hear the second startup chime. Hopefully, the hard drive has shown up now.
Mount and eject groups of volumes with a single click.
NOTE: While various versions of the Disk Utility will be slightly different, they all operate similar to these instructions. While Apple provides an “Erase” feature, we recommend using Partition to initialize the drive, even if you are not setting up partitions. Using the Partition utility will verify that all previous formatting information is deleted before initializing.
